Designing for Developers at Nylas

Nylas is a communications API platform that enables developers to integrate email, calendar, and contact functionality into their apps with ease. It streamlines complex backend infrastructure so companies can focus on building seamless, user-facing experiences.

At Nylas, I worked across multiple product areas, focusing on documentation usability and dashboard design. I led a complete redesign of the API reference library, a key resource that transformed both internal team workflows and external developer interactions. By leveraging user research and usability testing, I improved accessibility, navigation, and clarity for a critical company resource.

Improving the Dev experience for Nylas’ APIs

Background
At Nylas, the API Reference was the core entry point for developers integrating communication features like email, calendar, and contacts. However, the experience had become outdated, fragmented, and difficult to navigate—hurting developer confidence and increasing reliance on support.

Problem
Developers struggled to find and understand the information they needed, leading to slower onboarding, higher support load, and friction for self-serve users—a growing priority for the business.

Solution
I led a full redesign of the API Reference, focusing on information architecture, usability, and clarity. I collaborated with DevRel, Engineering, and Docs to restructure endpoints, introduce persistent navigation, improve scannability, and create clear, consistent page patterns. We conducted user testing with developers to validate the experience and iterated based on feedback.

Result
The refreshed API Reference was expected to launch as part of a broader developer experience initiative, as it improved task success in usability testing. However, due to changes in staffing I was unable to see through this project to the finish line.
